This term most people know, but in the case of Thailand - it is true for 100% (or more?).
You have been married for some years and has perhaps even children together and your wife have probably at least one child from a marriage with a Thaiman (they usually have it). You live in the secure knowledge that you are a small (knit) family. This is what has happened to me:
My wife's boy now nearing 18 years old is very noisy, had to quit high school, committed petty crimes, including assault, car theft and he is terribly difficult to have at home (lazy, lying about most things, etc). My wife think for the most part he is a scourge and says she hates him and would prefer to send him back to Thailand. They are arguing and shouting with each other often, but now comes the interesting bit, if I happen to scold him for something he had done then it is turned against me - in other words, I may be yelled at from my wife because I'm mean to the "poor boy". This is a difficult clash of cultures that must be taken into account and be able to live with in a relationship with a Thai woman.
The next example is more positive and is about family ties.
It is not unusual for a Thai family consisting of five to 10 children with the mother at the head and the father died a few years due to an excessive intake of Thai whiskey. Within this family there are often serious disputes between different groups of child / parent. Fghts and, apparently, a smoldering hatred between the groups are not uncommon. But - if it happens something serious with a family member or someone / some outsiders are causing problems so concludes the trail. It really is "one for all - all for one". Even if your blood may be only slightly thicker than water it can be nice to know that you are one in the family - If it is not you who has caused the problems ... ... ...
